Our second edition to the 'Coffee?' series takes us to Ethiopia - the famed birthplace of coffee. Discovered in the 9th century, coffee has been used in social and religious gatherings ever since.
This design takes inspiration from the walled city of Harar - located in the hilltops of eastern Ethiopia. A centre of coffee cultivation: home to the famed 'longberry' variation and; a spiritual religious hub that is said to have roots back to the first Islamic migration in the time of The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Coffee is more than a drink in Harar - often the centre piece of wedding ceremonies and gatherings of Dhikr (remembrance of God), it serves as rejuvenator for both consumers and servers. In a traditional ‘coffee ceremony’ coffee is not just consumed but washed, roasted, ground and poured with all present taking part in the process. Fragrant with aroma of frankincense and coffee over the back drop of odes of praise in gatherings like these - awaken the souls of the seekers engrossed in love and worship.
